Web tips

Recently I learned some simple yet valuable tips for congregations trying to connect with folks online.

First I've seen a variety of attempts to conduct Bible studies or faith conversations online. Studies have shown that having six committed participants to an online conversation(blog or listserve) can make the difference between success and failure. Six may seem like a high number but that number will assure the conversation will continue despite illness or a hectic work schedule that takes one or more individuals away from their computer and active participation. Differing perspectives that maintain focus will make for interesting conversation and keep readers.

Second, I have noticed a temptation to put as much information on the front page of a website as possible. Studies show that few people tend to scroll down a page. So the challenge is to make the home page attractive (not crowded)and designed in such a way that the initial screen view provides sufficient information to answer initial questions or easily pull them into the website for additional information. Therefore design that home page to be attractive to the person who shops for a church online. Provide quick links to pages that contain indepth information for visitors and others in addition to the forms, schedules or lists that will be of value primarily to members. The more your own members use the website the better the chance they will refer others to it as well.
